'Convergence - Five Artists Paint New Orleans'Opening November 7, 2008 at Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC. The show features John Cosby, Marc R. Hanson, Joseph Paquet, George Strickland, and Mary Whyte. The five of us spent time in February 2008 painting and absorbing the sights, sounds and culture of New Orleans, LA and have mounted an exhibit of paintings to be displayed at Coleman Fine Art for one month, beginning November 7, 2008.
As I complete paintings for my part of the exhibit I will post them into this collection.

Nocturnes
View
this Collection
The nocturnes in this collection are both plein air and studio pieces.
"Painting nocturnes points out just how unfamiliar we are with the familiar, those views we see daily under the full light of the sun. My work for this show concentrates on the natural landscape, my subject matter of choice otherwise, but in the nocturnal mode. That means that what I know from observation about that landscape during the day, it's colors, textures and range of value, is completely different. Subtlety is the operative word in this case. The value range is extremely limited as is the gamut of color available to be used to portray the scenes. I found that to be the most intriguing part of painting this group of work. With only an exception or two, most of my nocturnes are of nature lit by nature where almost no external light source is available. I did some nocturnal plein air work in preparation and have done that over the last few years from time to time. But I found the most advantage in just being outside at night, sitting and observing what I saw, making mental notes to be used later in the studio to create the paintings I have on display."
